  Hans Thomalla
Composer

Born in Bonn. After completing his Abitur he began composition studies with Hans Zender in Frankfurt, completing his degree in 1999. He worked intensively with theater and wrote theatrical music for a number of institutions while still a student, including the Schauspiel Frankfurt. After completing his studies he joined the Stuttgarter Oper as a dramaturgical assistant and continued to work there until 2002, ultimately as a musical advisor and production dramaturge. Hans Thomalla has written numerous works for various sets of instruments for groups including Ensemble Modern, ensemble recherche, and Ensemble ascolta. His orchestral work Rauschen was premiered by the SWR-Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden/Freiburg in 1999, Affirmation (Auslöschung for soloists), orchestra, and recorded sounds by the Sinfonieorchester des Saarländischen Rundfunks in 2002. Since September 2002 Hans Thomalla has continued his studies with Brian Ferneyhough in Stanford, California as a grantee of Stanford University and the DAAD. In summer 2004 Hans Thomalla was awarded the Kranichsteiner Musikpreis. In 2006, premiere of his piece fremd at Forum Neues Musiktheater.
