back    Salvatore Sciarrino Composer Born in Palermo in 1947. Italian composer, studied composition independently and studied electronic music with Franco Evangelisti at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome. Sciarrino’s works are primarily sound compositions. By altering instrumental sounds and juxtaposing and mixing musical tones and noises, the composer seeks to demonstrate the variability of the material. He has composed Operas— Amore e Psiche (Milano 1973); Cailles en sarcophage (Venice 1980); Vanitas (Milano 1981); Lohengrin (after J. Laforgue, Milano 1984); and Perseo e Andromeda (Stuttgart 1991, without orchestra; singers are accompanied by live electronics). Orchestral works—Variazioni for cello and orchestra (1974); Clair de lune for clarinet and orchestra (1976); Autoritratto nella notte (1982); Allegoria della notte for violin and orchestra (1985); Sui poemi concentrici I for violin and orchestra (1988); II for flute, clarinet, cello, and orchestra (1988); and III for flute, violin, viola d’amore, and orchestra (1988); Lettura da lontano, fragment for double bass and orchestra (1989). Chamber music—String Quartet no. 2 (1975); Il silenzio degli oracoli for wind quintet (1989). Piano works. Vocal music— Kindertotenlied (Song on the death of children, after Friedrich Rückert) for soprano, tenor as echo, and small orchestra (1979); Due arie marine (Laforgue) for mezzo-soprano and electronics (1990).
