The Forum Neues Musiktheater of the Staatsoper Stuttgart, together with IRCAM (Paris) and sonic emotion AG (Zurich), invites you to presentations and a workshop on a new technology for surround sound projection: wave field synthesis (WFS) opens up many possibilities for the holographic presentation of sound in theater, concerts, events, and opera. This technology makes it possible for the first time to place sound sources in space at will. The sounds can be rendered with perspectival accuracy, much like a hologram. This years workshop focuses on the creative possibilities of the new sound techniques. It is intended for sound engineers, directors, artistic directors, composers, musicians, and other creative people from the fields of theater, opera, and ballet, to interested parties from worlds of business, industry, trade fairs, film and sound production, and the general public. A variety of presentations will be offered over a three-day period, but the events can also be attended separately. Workshop for Composers and Sound Designers Thursday, May 19, 2005, 16.00 to 20.00 Composition and Sound Design with Wave Field Synthesis Composers from IRCAM present compositions and mixes and are available for discussions (limited participation, preregistration required). Workshop for Sound Engineers Friday, May 20, 2005, 16.00 to 20.00 Sound projection with multispeaker systems and wave field synthesis This workshop is intended for sound engineers and sound projectionists for theater and event technology (limited participation, preregistration required). Open Workshop, Introduction to Wave Field Synthesis Saturday, May 21, 10:00 to 17.00 Wave field synthesis and 3-D audio in practice An overview of design possibilities, applications, and technical background (open workshop, preregistration requested). Employees from IRCAM, the company sonic emotion, and the Forum Neues Musiktheater of the Staatsoper Stuttgart offer an overview of the most recent developments in wave-field synthesis, demonstrating practical applications using mixes of music, noise, and radio plays, and are available for specific questions. The lectures will be in German and English.
