The Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology of Zurich School of Music, Drama and Dance has been involved for some time now in research in the field of spatial sound projection and has specialized in the Ambisonics technology from England. Over the years it has both developed applications and come up with a sound system whose capabilities and flexibility do justice to the requirements of Ambisonic concerts.
Both aspects—hardware and software—will be presented. In additions, the principles of spatial perception will be discussed, the mathematical background of Ambisonics explained, and aesthetic and compositional considerations of music in space discussed. Finally, workshops will demonstrate the technology in practice and allow participants to explore it themselves.
The workshop is intended for composers, sound engineers and technicians, media artists, and interested parties with a basic knowledge of surround-sound technology in postproduction and real-time applications.
FNM and the ICST will present a concert as a supplement to the workshop. All the pieces that will be performed were composed with this surround sound technology. The sound is rendered via the multi-channel speaker systems developed at the ICST. The following pieces will be performed:
Natasha Barrett (NOR)
Gary Berger (CH)
Ambrose Field (UK)
Charlotte Hug (CH)
José López Montes (E)
Lukas Vogelsang (CH)
